Polycystic Ovarian Disease

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) refers to a condition caused by hormonal imbalances. Women suffering from PCOS produce higher than normal amounts of male hormones. This affects ovulation and can result in irregular periods. In some cases, women suffering from PCOS may have irregular periods. This, in turn, can make it harder for these women to conceive. In fact, PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility.

Woman with PCOS

  • Do not release an egg (ovulate) regularly
  • Have ovaries that contain many small cystic structures, about 2-9 mm in diameter
  • Have excess hair growth
  • May have pimples
  • May have infertility

PCOS can be diagnosed with an ultrasound. Some of the symptoms that you could experience if you are having PCOS are heavy bleeding, unwanted hair growth, acne and hormonal imbalances.

The severity of PCOS may vary from mild, to moderate, to severe. A large part of tackling PCOS involves simple yet effective lifestyle modifications, which include weight reduction (BMI correction), regular exercise, a well-balanced protein-rich diet, plenty of fluids and anti-oxidant supplements.

At the Lakshmi Fertility Centre, we handle moderate PCOS with medication, while in severe cases, we recommend a minimally invasive procedure called ovarian drilling to trigger ovulation.
